I waited for this film to come out in the USA for over a year. It was worth the wait because The Wonders takes you on a entirely different journey of the the Italian landscape.
The film centers around a family of beekeepers made up of a domineering German father, an Italian mother and four girls between ages 4 to 14. The film is poetic and radiates authenticity. I suspect this is because, Alice Rohrwacher, who wrote and directed the film, largely used her own experiences to create this compelling family drama. If you want to see a film that is different from the typical Hollywood film, this is one to watch. Except for the final scenes, which is a bit of letdown, the film does a marvelous job in telling the story of how some kids have to play the role of family heads because their parents are not able to play this role.
