Thank God for moderate expectations. Silver Linings Playbook was much better than I anticipated. Pat (Bradley Cooper) remains undiagnosed with bipolar personality disorder until he finds his wife in the shower cheating with a colleague from work. Pat almost kills the man. His lawyer manages to keep him out of prison by letting the state lock him up in a mental hospital.

I can see that Amour wins an Oscar tomorrow for Best Foreign Film, but I doubt that he will the Oscar for Best Picture. Why? Amour is too serious, too much art and too little entertainment.

Typically when we first read a book and then see the film based on the book we are disappointed. In the case of Life of Pi, I enjoyed the 3-D film directed by Ang Lee a lot more than the book, although the film follows the plot quite closely.

I remember the musical on which this film is based as the best musical that I had seen on Broadway. Victor Hugo’s story was powerful, the singing superb and the acting believable. I felt deeply violated by the film adaptation of the musical.

The Bourne Legacy. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) does not show up in person in this film. Maybe that is why it was received more poorly than the previous Bourne film. The film was actually entertaining. Total Recall. In this futuristic film only small portions of the earth are still inhabitable.

With the drama of the last election still fresh in our memories, it is a welcome adventure to journey back into year 1865 and see the political machinery of the US in action. The movie chronicles a short period in the life of Lincoln between winning re-lection and getting assassinated. It documents in great detail the drama of how Lincoln won the passage of the 13th amendment to the constitution, banning slavery for all time, while the Civil War is still ranging on.
