The Dallas Buyers Club

This year the members of the Academy of Motion Picture have to make a very difficult choice when they vote for the Oscar in the best actor category.

For me the choice comes down to either Chiwetel Ejiofor for his performance in 12 Years a Slave or Matthew McConaughey for his portrayal of a homophobic hustler at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. Both films are excellent and the choice is difficult. But in the end I think I would vote for Matthew McConaughey simply because his growth as an actor is stunning. I remember the painful love scene with Jodie Foster in Contact (1997) where he could not convince the audience that he was in love with the Jodie Foster character. McConaughey has no trouble to convince you that he is a homophobic redneck in Texas, who came down with aids because he shared the same hooker as needle using drug addict. Because most people with AIDS initially came from the homosexual population he suddenly finds himself rejected by his homophobic friends and according to his doctor only 30 more days to live. The story that follows is quite amazing. This is a performance not to be missed.
