Coda
Coda is the remake of a French movie. The American version is taking place in a small fishing town in New England. At the center of the film is a high school senior whose parents and older brother are deaf. She has been the translator for her family with the outside “hearing” world for her entire life. But she’s getting tired of this as she wants to lead a more independent life.
The film reminded me very much of the German film beyond silence which also focused on the strange experience of a child who can hear but her parents are covered in silence. The heroine of *Coda* signs up for a choir class in her high school because she is interested in a boy who wants to sing in the choir. This leads to a wonderful contrast between her hopes for being a singer well her parents will never ever be able to hear what this means. I highly recommend this movie especially if you’re interested in music and what life feels like if you cannot hear. The movie is not playing in theaters near you but on Apple+ streaming.
